Reaching for the unattainable is the repetitious drudge of the hand reaching out and not being able to grasp anything. The hand is made of foam so it is very malleable and although it keeps form it is not made of the right material to be able to grab anything so as much as it keeps reaching out trying to find something to grab onto it always comes up empty-handed. I wanted this piece to be representative of the Myth of Sisyphus in which Sisyphus finds happiness in his eternal uphill pushing of the rock and its eternal fall. This is a reminder for myself to be more present in the moment and relish in the enjoyment of the processes of life and the repititiousness of humanity.
How this was created.
To create the hand I first made a mold of my own hand with algenate. Then I poured in a solution to the mold to create the foam material. The hand is on a steel pole that is welded to a screw attached to a laser cut acrylic disc which is on a lazy susand and rotated by a motor screwed into the wooden board.
